Fabric & Layout Tools
Plan your fabric before you buy and before you cut. Calculate yardage, account for shrinkage and stretch, optimize your layout, and handle pattern matching, lining, and unit conversions.
Fabric Yardage Calculator
Enter your pattern pieces — see how much fabric for 44", 54", and 60" widths with a layout diagram.
Fabric Layout Optimizer
Arrange pattern pieces on fabric to minimize waste — saves 15-30% vs manual layout.
Fabric Shrinkage Calculator
Cotton shrinks 3-5%, linen 5-10%. Find out how much extra to buy, or measure a swatch.
Knit Stretch Calculator
Test your fabric's stretch percentage (stretch gauge), compare to pattern requirements.
Stretch Adjustment Calculator
Fabric has less stretch than the pattern needs? Per-zone width adjustments by garment type.
Pattern Matching Calculator
Stripes, plaids, or large prints — how much extra fabric you need for matching at seams.
Lining Calculator
Which pieces to line, how much lining fabric, ease adjustments, and hem treatment.
Unit Converter
Inches, cm, mm, yards, meters — plus fabric width and seam allowance reference charts.
What Fabric Should I Use?
Recommended fabrics by garment type — weight, drape, stretch, and real examples for every project.
Will This Fabric Work?
Enter your fabric's weight, drape, and stretch to check compatibility with your pattern.
Before you buy fabric
1. Yardage — calculate how much you need for your fabric width
2. Shrinkage — add extra for pre-washing (cotton shrinks 3-5%)
3. Pattern matching — stripes and plaids need 10-25% more fabric
4. Lining — if your garment is lined, calculate lining yardage separately
Why layout matters
The difference between a good layout and a bad one can be 15-30% more fabric. The Layout Optimizer arranges your pieces on the fabric width you have, respecting grainlines and fold requirements, to minimize waste.
If you're working with knits, always check the stretch percentage against the pattern's requirement. A pattern designed for 50% stretch fabric won't fit right in 25% stretch fabric without adjustments.
