Fabric & Layout Tools

Plan your fabric before you buy and before you cut. Calculate yardage, account for shrinkage and stretch, optimize your layout, and handle pattern matching, lining, and unit conversions.

Before you buy fabric

1. Yardage — calculate how much you need for your fabric width

2. Shrinkage — add extra for pre-washing (cotton shrinks 3-5%)

3. Pattern matching — stripes and plaids need 10-25% more fabric

4. Lining — if your garment is lined, calculate lining yardage separately

Why layout matters

The difference between a good layout and a bad one can be 15-30% more fabric. The Layout Optimizer arranges your pieces on the fabric width you have, respecting grainlines and fold requirements, to minimize waste.

If you're working with knits, always check the stretch percentage against the pattern's requirement. A pattern designed for 50% stretch fabric won't fit right in 25% stretch fabric without adjustments.
